Small round figures sitting on wooden pews in Candle Chapel, a stone chapel with stained-glass windows and a stand of lit candles

Candle Chapel

Light a candle. Sit a while.

Candle Chapel is a free 3D room that opens in your web browser: a small stone chapel with stained-glass windows, wooden pews and a stand of candles. You become a small, round figure and sit quietly with whoever else happens to be there — sometimes one person, sometimes a hundred. There is no chat, no account and nothing to install.

Why a candle

In many places people step into a quiet chapel, light a small candle for someone, and sit for a moment before going on with their day. Candle Chapel keeps that simple habit and opens it to anyone, from anywhere. Every candle lit here stays on the stand for a day, so the people who come after you can see that others were here too.

What you can do there

Light a candle
Walk to the candle stand and light one. Everyone in the room sees it, and the stand shows how many candles were lit in the last 24 hours.
Sit
Take a place on one of the wooden pews and stay as long as you like.
Kneel
Kneel where you are, or at the kneeler in front of your pew.
Sign of the cross
A small, quiet gesture that the people near you can see.
Rosary
A full-screen string of 50 beads you pull down one at a time. Others see you holding it.
Nod
A small nod to the people near you. They see that you nodded.

Questions

Is Candle Chapel free?

Yes. There is no account, no sign-up and no payment. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

Can I talk to the other people?

No. There is no chat and no place to type anything. You can nod to someone nearby, and they will see it. That is the whole conversation.

Do I have to belong to anything to come in?

No. The door is open to everyone. There is nothing to learn and nothing to get right — come in, sit down, leave whenever you like.

What happens to the candle I light?

It stays lit on the stand for 24 hours, together with every other candle lit that day, in every room. Only the number is kept — not who lit it, and not for whom.

How many people can be in one room?

Up to 100. When a room fills up, new visitors are taken to another one. The Share button gives you a link to your exact room, so a friend can come and sit next to you.

Who are the other people?

Real visitors, in the room at the same moment as you. Everyone gets a random, gentle name such as “Quiet Sparrow”, and a new one on every visit.

What do you keep about me?

Nothing that names you. There is no account and you never type your name. Your rosary count is saved only in your own browser. A lit candle leaves only an anonymous record that is deleted after about two days. We count visits with Google Analytics, which sets a cookie to tell new visits from returning ones; it never gets your name or your room link, and nothing is used for advertising. In Europe, Google Analytics is not used at all. There are no advertising cookies.

Is there sound?

Yes, softly: the air of the stone room, a match striking when someone lights a candle, and the beads of the people near you. Far away, an organ plays slow chords; you can switch it off in Settings. Sound starts only after you press Enter.

Which languages does it speak?

19 languages: English, Español, Português (Brasil), Français, Italiano, Deutsch, Polski, Nederlands, 한국어, Tiếng Việt, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Hrvatski, Magyar, Čeština, Slovenčina, Lietuvių, Slovenščina, Українська. It follows your browser’s language, and you can switch at any time.

Does something read oddly in your language?

The translations were made with care, but not all of them by native speakers. If a word or a sentence sounds wrong, write to hello@uhzlab.com and we will fix it.
